Two hours on your phone doesn’t feel like much. It’s a commute, a lunch break or a couple of episodes of something. But daily habits compound, and few habits compound quite like scrolling.
So before you open our screen time calculator, take a guess.
Why 2h 21m a day is bigger than it looks
That’s the global average, according to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report. It’s slightly down from 143 minutes a year earlier. After a decade of growth, time on social media has finally flattened out.
You may see higher figures elsewhere. GWI’s updated method, for example, puts it at more than 2.5 hours a day. The gap comes from how each study measures usage, not from a sudden jump in scrolling. That’s why we use the more conservative number.
Either way, the total adds up fast. Over a year, it comes to about 36 full days. Over a lifetime, it runs into years. For a 25-year-old, it’s close to five.
Get your real numbers first
Most people underestimate how long they scroll. Your phone already keeps an exact record, so use that instead of a guess. Check the weekly daily average, not a single day. One lazy Sunday shouldn’t decide your result.
Go to Settings > Screen Time > See All App & Website Activity. You’ll see your daily average and the time spent in each app this week.
Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. The dashboard shows your time in each app. Menu names vary slightly by phone maker.
Try the screen time calculator
Enter your age, then set the minutes for each app. The screen time calculator turns them into four numbers and a map of the months you have left. The sliders start at the global average, so you can see the baseline before you add your own.
What your screen time calculator result means
The years figure counts round-the-clock time. It treats your scrolling as one unbroken block, day and night.
The waking-hours figure is the one that stings. Sleep takes its share no matter what. Scrolling competes with everything else: work, friends, exercise and the side project you keep postponing.
Here’s how common habits compare. The last row updates with your result.
| Daily social media time | Full days per year | Years of life (age 25 to 73) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | 7.6 days | 1.0 year |
| 1 hour | 15.2 days | 2.0 years |
| 2h 21m (global average) | 35.8 days | 4.7 years |
| 3h 30m | 53.3 days | 7.0 years |
| 5 hours | 76.1 days | 10.0 years |

How you compare
Age is the biggest divide. Users aged 16 to 24 average around 3 hours 30 minutes a day. That’s about an hour more than the global average.
Location matters too. In early 2025, users in Brazil spent about 3 hours 49 minutes a day on social media. In the US, the figure was about 2 hours 16 minutes.
Interestingly, the generation that built the social feed is pulling back. Millennials are posting less than they used to, even as most of us keep scrolling. We looked at why in Why Are Millennials Posting Less on Social Media?
Where your screen time goes
Not all screen time is equal. Thirty minutes on a call with family is not the same as thirty minutes of autoplay video. That’s why the calculator splits your total by app.
As you look at your split, watch for three patterns:
- One app dominates. If a single app takes more than half your total, a limit there will do the most work.
- Autoplay feeds. Short-video feeds are built without stopping points, so sessions run longer than you planned.
- “Just checking” visits. Many short visits add up faster than a few long ones. Each one also breaks your focus.
How to win back time
You don’t need a digital detox. Small cuts, repeated daily, compound just as fast as the scrolling did. Tick the habits you’ll actually try, then choose how many minutes you want back.
Screen time calculator FAQ
What is the average daily time spent on social media?
About 2 hours and 21 minutes a day worldwide, according to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report. Some studies, such as GWI’s, put it above 2.5 hours.
How many years of your life do you spend on social media?
At the global average, a 25-year-old who lives to 73 will spend about 4.7 years on social media, counted as round-the-clock time. In waking hours, that’s about 7 years.
How does the screen time calculator work?
It multiplies your daily minutes by your remaining years: daily minutes ÷ 1,440 × remaining years. Your waking share is daily minutes ÷ (waking hours × 60).
Is 2 hours of social media a day too much?
There’s no universal cutoff. A better question is what that time replaces. If scrolling cuts into sleep, work or time with people, it’s worth reducing.
